Question of the Day #36

Karaoke. Some people's nightmare. My guilty pleasure.

So last night, my friend and roommate from college, Michelle, was in town visiting from New York. And since we went to school in Boston we thought it fitting to go to my favorite Boston bar. Wednesday is karoake night.

As my friends chattered, a girl began to squeak out Heart's "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You." She pitched and belted as her friends danced around her. I giggled, squirmed and couldn't focus on the conversation. I had to focus on the worst song in the world.

Don't get me wrong, early Heart is genius. Songs like "Allies" and "Magic Man" are indeed magical. But "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" is a cheese laden, musical jumping the shark.

As I walked by my friend Stacie, she squealed, "Oh my GOD Suzanne, you HAVE to sing this song!!!" (Read that with Fran Drescher's version of a Rhode Island accent.)

I said, "I hate this song."

She said, "I LOVE this song!"

I said,"Of course you do."

And we burst out laughing.

So the question is, what song makes you cringe?

xoxo,

Suzanne

  1. Great question, but I'm going to have to think about this one. Lots of bands make me cringe, but that's not the point, right? So I'll think about bad songs from good bands and post later.

  2. me too! I try to keep those worst songs OUT of my head. I have to hear them to go UGH!
I'm hoping that I am UGH free today.

  3. The few that immediately come to mind ...
"Love Shack" B-52's. I had a fear that I would somehow accidently buy this song, adding to its popularity then prolonging its life on the radio. "Safety Dance," Men Without Hats. That video makes me cringe as well. "Walk Like An Egyptian" Bangles. What does that mean? Really? I know it was a hit, but really, how do you come up with that? Cringe-y video also.

  4. The very first song that came to mind was Butterfly by Crazy Town. I absolutely despise that song. I don't know how anyone could actually like it. It makes my skin crawl and embarrasses me for humanity. How's that for not liking a song! As for cringy songs by good bands, later Chicago makes me cringe. Sorry for being so venomous about Butterfly if anyone likes it.

  5. OMG! Good question! Sooo many that make me cringe (Strokin', Macarana, Mr. Roboto, She Blinded Me With Science). I could probably list entire bands (The Stones, Eddie Vedder).

...but in keeping with the spirit of Christmas, Paul McCartney and the Wings' Wonderful Christmas Time makes me crazy-irrational-mad. It's enough to make me leave the mall empty-handed! ...and dammit, now it is in my head. Arrrrgggghhh!!!!

  7. Maybe it's me, but it looks like your blog is a bit hosed. All the sidebar stuff is at the bottom. Temporary glitch or something else, I dunno.

Crappy song? You light up my life
I worked backstage for the high school talent show. Three people sang that song. Through rehearsals, dress rehearsals and the final performance. Gag!

  8. I guess it's true that one man's ceiling is another man's floor. I love Mr. Roboto. Though I guess it's more like I embrace it in it's badness.

  9. I find "Cherish" by Kool & the Gang to be pretty tortuous.

  10. I don't remember song titles well but the one about leaving the cake out in the rain and never having the recipe again has always made my stomach feel queasy. Which reminds me of... yummy, yummy, yummy I've got love in my tummy. I have to agree with Sarah about You Light Up My Life... Ewww! I know there are others but I gratefully don't remember them right now.

  11. I totally agree with the Wings Wonderful Christmas Time. So lame. So annoying. Who paid money for that? I can't stand anything by Miley Cyrus. She has a terrible voice and I don't know why people listen to her!

A song that makes me smile? "Black Velvet." Not because I like the song. But because when I sang in a karaoke contest ages ago, the girl who lost to me sang that song. Every time I hear it I smile and remember the trip I won to Hawaii!

  12. Oh, I *so* hate the Safety Dance, too! Also, the song where Wang Chung says "Everybody Wang Chung tonight!"

"Girls" (if that's in fact the name--I'm not really sure) by the Beastie Boys also makes me cringe and just pisses me off in general, even through their line about girls with new-wave hairdos is kind of cute. As far as jump the shark songs, go, though, I'm gonna say "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo, since it kind of marks the place where their unique brand of positive weirdness went into decline and they got too poppy for their own good.

  13. This time of year the song that really makes me crings is "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney... AHHH - I just HATE IT!!!!

  14. Bad to the Bone or I Drink Alone - George Thorogood
    These Words - Natasha Bedingfield
My Heart Will Go On - Oh Celine, Celine, Celine
Chicken Man - Indigo Girls...what the?!
Might as well throw in the Electric Boogie and Don't Worry Be Happy...

guitar and harmony are amazing...like all of their stuff. It's the "chicken man chicken man chicken man, hold my hand" part that grates. The version on the cd is the worst!! I think it's on Rites of Passage.

  16. It's funny, I would actually liek to hear some of the songs that people listed, for nostalgia's sake (I can probably sing all the words to Cherish, quite cheesily thank you, I know I can get down to Safey Dance and Mr. Roboto, and She Blinded Me With Science is actually about me - bet you didn't know that). There's very little that will make me change the radio station in disgust, but most songs by Nickleback kinda piss me off.

  17. Oh, I change my answer now that I just heard Pink's "I Wanna Start a Fight" come on the radio just now, and couldn't jump on the dial fast enough. That one really does make me cringe. Let's leave the na na na na's to KC and the Sunshine Band, Steam, J. Geils Band, and little kids taunting each other on the playground, shall we?
