Question of the Day #563

I'm getting hung up on wordcount. I can't believe it. I don't think I've ever worried about wordcount in my life. But my WIP snowballed uphill into this awesomely disturbing climax around 100 pages and now I'm a little worried about the rest of it.

Major scenes have been plotted out and I'm sure my characters will take me on some wild ride and steer the story into places I haven't even considered, but if I focus on writing those major scenes, I'm thinking this may be one short book.

Maybe it's my way of worrying or procrastinating or slowing down the crazy roll I've been on for the last few weeks. I have to stop worrying about word count and like my Mom says, "Just do it!"

What worries get in the way when you're working on a project?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. I came upon this same worry with my recently finished first draft. It's so strange because my first ms- I was hung up on the wordiness. Now it's the other way around.

  2. I guess I worry if it has enough of a marketing hook. But I worry much more when I am NOT working on a project. ("What if I never get a good idea again?")

  3. I worry about how long I take to storyboard. I worry about creating engaging programs and whether true learning will occur as a result. I worry about being creative enough, but conversely worry about the produciton costs of being too creative. Ultimately, I worry about whether the client will like it. I'm a bit of a worry wart when it comes to work. :(

  4. I worry about the saggy taffy middle - whether I'm going to steer clear of "boring" or pick up the pace enough to keep my reader turning the page. I also worry whether or not I'll run out of Diet Coke before I finish the scene.

  5. I worried for a while that I was wasting my time changing my one WIP from prose to verse. I don't know if it is working and even if it is if it will continue to work. What I do know is that my only chance to find that answer is to continue forward. I also know that right now each verse I finish makes me feel good -- that alone makes it worth writing.

  6. Hey, just go with the flow, get it all out there on paper. Maybe it will turn out to be two books, rather than one short one!

  7. I was worried about how to get my characters "into" a certain situation. Now I'm worrying about how to get them "out" of it. Seems silly ...
