My friend N remembers her father reading the entire Little House series to her, one chapter a night, when she was a child.
I remember begging my mother to let me stay up and read "just one more chapter!" as a kid.
How did you get your read-on? Did your parents read to you when you were growing up? Did you read by yourself?

Suzanne
Although both my Mom AND Dad are voracious readers, I don't remember being *read to* much. I read on my own - under the covers with the cliche flashlight. I think because my parents understood the value of literacy, they didn't punish me for sneaking in reading time, but rather bought me a bigger flashlight.
ReplyDeleteDuring the summer months, when we bored- my mom would sit us all down in bed with her and she'd read Nancy Drew mysteries that we took out from the library.
ReplyDeleteOh CQG - I loved Nancy Drew. She's the whole reason I started out as a reporter. Well, that and my mom saying: Novelist? Are you sure that's such a good idea? Maybe you need a back-up plan...
ReplyDeleteI am sure they did read to me, but I don't have memories of it...I do remember reading the same seven books over and over that I had on my bookshelf as a preteen. Oh! I do remember my mom, sister and I reading aloud from Where the Sidewalk ends and giggling in grade school.
ReplyDeleteMy parents never, ever, not once read to me! I've always had to take my own reading initiative. I read Cinderella, Snow White, and Green Eggs & Ham all the time when I was little!!
ReplyDeleteI ready myself Little House and Nancy Drew until I discovered Judy Blume and never looked back. : )
ReplyDeleteThere are only a few stories that I remember my parents reading to me - Cynthia and the Unicorn and Mister Dog come to mind. But, I have more memories of my older siblings reading to me and with me. We used to turn the lights off and read the Little House books by candlelight.
ReplyDeleteMy parents didn't read to me but I definitely read to myself (Little House on the Prarie, Anne of Green Gables, Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High). Thankfully my parents were pretty relaxed on how late I stayed up to do so. I still read before lights out, and I still get caught staying up late to read "just one more chapter."
ReplyDeleteI don't ever remember having been read to, but I was an avid reader in my youth. I still love to read, devoured 6 books on my last trip! Can't seem to sit still for too long at home.
ReplyDeleteToo many things to do :)
The first time I remember being read to is when a teacher read Island of the Blue Dolphins. I loved it and it was the highlight of the day through much of the 3rd or 4th grade. At home I read alone.
ReplyDeleteI was a reading fool when I was a kid - the one who always had a book in her hand.
ReplyDeleteI just remember my parents having a talk with me when I was twelve that I read too much science fiction and needed to get other things out of the library. They weren't happy when they discovered they had pushed me to discover Stephen King... ;)
ReplyDeleteMy mom was an avid reader and always had a paperback with her. However, I don't recall her reading to me much, so I think I did it on my own. I read to my kids everyday though. Right now I'm writing a MG story and the boys want to hear each chapter as I finish it. That's fun!
