Question of the Day #547

On a warm summer evening when I was eight years old, I sat on my neighbor's back deck waiting for her to come outside and play with me. Her cat stepped onto my lap and settled there. But then a bird chirped or a squirrel darted in front of us. Whatever it was startled the cat and she scrambled, leaving a scratch on my left arm. The tiny line is still there.

In sixth grade, I swiped one of my mother's pink disposable razors and shaved my legs. Without shaving cream and with a shaky hand, I scraped off a nice chunk of skin on my left calf. Today, the horizontal scar is a shade lighter than the rest of my skin.

In seventh grade woodshop, a miter saw dropped on my right ring finger. The teacher made me feel like a baby when I asked to go to the nurse. The teeth marks still there today are proof that he was a jerk.

Do you have any scars? What stories are behind them?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Too many minor ones to list. I am an eternal klutz.

I have the obligatory scars on my legs from shaving, and plenty on my hands & arms from doing stupid things. Nothing too notable & exciting though (thankfully).

  2. I ran into the corner of our TV (you know, the 1970's kind incased in wood) when I was 2 and split my head open. I've got an inch-long horizontal scar that now blends in nicely with the wrinkle on my forehead. I also have itty bitty scars all over my left forearm after accidentally putting it throw a plate glass window.

  3. A miter saw?! Ouch! Many scars ... many stories! My largest one is from my 2 c-sections ... two very happy stories! :-)

  4. A cat attacked me when I was really little, and I still have the marks on my arm. Not too long after that, I slipped and cracked my lip open on a garage door leaving probably my most prominent scar. When I was five, I fell on some play equipment in the winter, and have a scar on my chin. That was the end of the accidental scars.

Knee surgery and an appendectomy in my adult life have marked further life scars. I love them all as they remind me of tougher times and to be thankful for my good health.

  5. I once thought I could roller blade while walking a pit bull. My discolored shoulder serves as my constant reminder. ; )

  6. What do you think is cooler? A scar or a tattoo? I say scars because of the stories behind them.

I have a thin scar that starts at the top of my life line in the middle of my palm and circles down around the pad of my thumb and then over my wrist to end in a wavy curlicue two inches above my wrist. I had a cyst that was shaped like a dog bone with one end in my palm and the other above my wrist, and the surgeon did this crazy zigzag incision to avoid as many tendons and nerves as possible. I have full use of my hand but there is still an area of numbness at the base of my thumb and there always will be. People who don't know give me a funny look if they notice my scar.

    Thanks for joining my blog.

  7. The freshest is still from my Achilles surgery last June. In case you don't remember, that was to repair the sports injury incurred in an intense game of hopscotch with my 3 year old niece.

  8. When I was 7, we used to sit on my father's table in the business section of our retail shop. My sis and I had a tussle and I fell backwards - sustained a cut on the back of my head as I fell backwards and hit the corner of the solid safe vault!!The scar remains - about 2inches long . My mum applied some thing thick and black. It healed and I didn't get any stitches. All's well:))

  9. When I was 8 or so I mananged to stick a very sharp pencil point into my left hand pinky. There still is a black line under the skin! A skinned knee from a bike fall marks another childhood milestone. The rest came as an adult. I haven't thought of the carbon stain in years! Can't believe it is still there!

  11. I have one on my thumb that came from a machete. I was trying to cut some sugar cane. I should have remembered that knives are always dangerous in my hands ;)

  12. Interesting, the stories behind the things that mark us! I do have a scar - a giant one of my knee. Apparently, I tripped over a tree root and fell. I remember nothing!

  13. The strangest one I have is a little round circle above my mouth that was from a teenage bout of chicken pox. I've got half a dozen more from surgeries, which do remind me when I notice them how precious life is.

  14. I have lots of scars. Both my feet had surgeries, so they're all messed up. Then when I was about ten, I rode a bike with no brakes, down a steep rode, barefoot. Yeah. Not the smartest thing I've ever done. Also have a scar under my chin from falling in the tub. Chicken pox scar. I'm a mess ...
