Question of the Day #708

Remember how we recently discussed whether or not gadgets and communication devices help or hurt us?

How plugged in are you? Are you constantly updating, texting and emailing? Or are you like my friend M, who doesn't even have a cell phone?

My cell is an embarassment. A cracked, old, red flip phone that takes and receives grainy, tiny pictures. I text quite a bit, actually, but when I send texts, they don't get saved. So I can't see what I sent. There's no text thread. It's like operating with half the technology. Which probably prevents me from being ridiculously addicted. If I had a fancy phone, I might google constantly, take pictures everywhere I go, text my whole life away.

What about you? What's your technical communication style like?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. I'm not very technical. I have a fancy phone, but I don't use most of its features because I have no clue how they work.

  2. I'm terrible. I have an iPhone 4...which replaced the iPhone 3 I cracked and "washed". Like Susan above, I have yet to tap into most of the features...

  3. my blackberry sleeps on the pillow next to me... is that bad?

  4. I tend to gravitate towards passive means of technical communication -- I prefer to communicate through Facebook, because it allows people to share and view things on their own time. I have a newish cell phone, but I only use it for my emergency purposes and don't really use its features. Other than that, I use email, IM, and GoTo Meetings a lot for work purposes since my colleagues are geographically dispersed, but I would still prefer face-to-face.

  5. I am in the IT profession so you'll have to excuse me for being a massive technological freak and over-communicator. I have two cell phones because if one has bad cell coverage I have the other. My iPhone is my primary device and my Blackberry a secondary device. I am constantly taking photos and video, googling, texting, and FB'ing. I have come to use my phones for every single thing like finding the train times out of NYC yesterday. Did I look at the printed train schedule? No. Did I look at their website on my laptop? No. I looked on my iPhone. Also I should mention I have several laptops and a desktop computer at home and am in the market for an iPad. Please excuse this IT professional addicted to her IT devices. :-)

  6. I text and call only. No internet on my phone I can't afford it...

  7. I resisted for years but am now one of those Crackberry addicts. I have unlimited cell minutes and email on the Blackberry...and it's with me most of the time. I try to limit its use so I won't connect FB or Twitter to it. I use texting and Blackberry Messenger (like IMs) a lot. I've avoided the iPhone b/c I figure if I get that I'll never look up again. People will talk to the top of my head and I'll end up walking into a deep ditch.

  8. I have a cell phone. I can call people, people can call me. I can receive texts, but I don't know how to send them, so I don't answer when I get a text. I can take pictures with my phone, but I usually forget. Oh, and I don't always have my phone with me. If I leave the house, the phone goes, but it stays in the car while I'm with people. Email now, I love. I check my emails several times a day, even though I don't usually have any. I love your blog with a question a day. Nita

  9. Although I'm basically a gadget person, I see no reason whatsoever to spend all that money on a cell when my little "go" phone works just as well. It allows text, pics, etc., but why all the texting anyway? I'd rather email!

  10. I just got a new cell phone after almost a decade--and only because I LOST my old phone on a plane. And I often don't have my cell on me. I'm not gadgety at all. No nook, no blackberry, never texted in my life, my iPod is a shuffle.

  11. Mine cell phone is ancient too. I like it that way. Like I said in the other post, mine is rarely even turned on. I like my iPod, but I only listen to that when I'm exercising or in the car. My husband is the gadgety one. He had his GPS on a hike today and had he listened to it and not me, we would have gone the wrong way. HA!
