Question of the Day #353

Last night, at the pub, I felt hot all over. My knees were burning. My throat was puffy and my head throbbed. S shook up a juice with everything from garlic to wheat grass in it, instructed me to drink that, take Tylenol and gargle with salt water.

I did.

Then H brought me Vitamin C and I ate a plate of broccoli (more Vitamin C). Now I'm wondering if I should have ditched my "I never get sick" mentality and gotten a flu shot.

I've never had a flu shot. How do you feel about flu shots and the all hubbub around them?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. I work at a Perinatal Center (loads of pregnant women at the hospital) and I got the seasonal flu shot. I never used to, but I've been getting it for the past 3 years. I can't say if it works or not, because I never got the flu before I started getting the shots.

I didn't get the H1N1 and I'm the only one at my job who could pass it up because I have little to no direct contact with patients. I have no problem with the regular flu shot. I was just hesitant to get the H1N1 because it seemed rushed. I like my stuff good and tested! LOL. So if I had to suggest anything to you, I'd say get the regular flu shot, wash your hands frequently and cough into your elbow-lol.

  2. I would get it, we got it for my kids and for adults it seems to be helpful....Lots of people at the bar might be passing it around without knowing it...

  3. I have been wrestling over what to do about this for me and the kids. I got them the regular flu shot several times. The last time I had them get anything was a flu mist two years ago and they both ended up getting sick from it. I don't think I had them get anything last year. Z was sick over the summer and we took her to the emergency room in Boston. At that time they had stopped testing for N1H1 saying that there was no point since there was no vaccination yet. My husband thinks we should all go get the shot but I'm torn.

I've never had a flu shot in my life. Until last year I had not had the flu since I was 12. I'm doing my practicum at a preschool right now and one of the teachers was sick last week. Her doctor confirmed it was swine flu. I'm only there two days a week but I assume I've been exposed and so far I'm perfectly fine. I just don't know what to do.

  4. I got the flu shot for the 1st time last year and a few days later I got the flu!! However, it only lasted a few days instead of a week and wasn't nearly as intense.

Not sure what I think about the H1N1 flu shot though.

  5. My daughter and I both got the seasonal flu shot and will get the preservative-free H1N1 vaccine as soon as it becomes available.

  6. I'm all for the flu shot. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea...but in my mind, it's an extra preventive measure.

  7. I used to get them every year. Since I stopped getting them I haven't gotten the flu. Right now I have a really bad cold though. Megga vitamin C is the answer.

  8. I, like Karen, have been getting the flu shot for the past 3 years. I will get H1N1 when/if it becomes available to us 'regular' folks. I work for a pharma company so am very comfortable with drugs and the process by which they are tested for safety and quality. You're taking a risk either way, and it's a personal choice which is more risky - getting the shot & dealing with side effects, or not getting it & therefore supposedly not mitigating your risk of getting sick. If I had kids, I really don't know if I would get the H1N1 shot for them or not... for me though I would get it. There's lots of info out there, so read up so you can make an educated decision! Stay healthy!

  9. BIG QUESTION! Was just up north to Canada this weekend and the subject was the same. Do I or don't I? With the same concerns. As for W & E, we don't have the very active contact of working people. We live in a lightly populated area. Not the same for all of you "dealing" with the public day in and day out.
    Interesting debate though.
I do have some concerns about the pharma. industry though, how pure are their thoughts and how does profit enter into the end result?
Was it rushed? Or is everything OK?
    ?
