Question of the Day #801

When I was growing up, my mother owned a florist. If I close my eyes, I can still smell the fresh scent of the shop. I can also relive the panic of getting 50 centerpieces to a wedding on time while running huge arrangements to the funeral home across the street.

It was a crazy business. But that's another story.

My favorite perk of my mother's business was that we aways had fresh flowers in the house. One bunch of lilies could flavor the whole bottom floor of the house. A little vase of gerbers, freesia or ranunculus always prettied up the counter in each bathroom.

What a luxury. As an adult, I really miss having fresh flowers in the house.

What's your favorite flower?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Lilac and lily of the valley. Both grew in the yard of my childhood home and their scents make me feel that safe, warm fuzzy feeling.

  2. Lilacs for smell, tulips and daffodils for longevity. I feel lucky to have acres of flowers free for my cutting!

  3. My mom always said that daisies were a happy flower. I couldn't agree more. I'm a daisy girl, too - but I tend to lean toward gerbers, my wedding flower.

  7. From my childhood, the bouquets of violets and lilies of the valley that my mother made. I like sweet peas, but for my table, I love tulips . . . they remind me of ballerinas as they continue to grow and reach out in elegant poses.

  10. Oh lucky you! I'm really fond of wild flowers (which don't make for good cut flowers) leatris in particular. I also really like the humble daisy and a good smelling rose.

  11. I've worked off and on in the floral biz so I can relate. I miss the flowers but not the stress! I have freesia coming up in my yard - one of my favorites, especially for the scent.

  12. I'm partial to roses, but have really enjoyed learning about all the different wildflowers in Montana. They're fun to photograph. Beargrass is one of my favorites.
