Question of the Day #212

The last couple nights, I've been helping out, waiting tables, at my friend's pub. They've been busy nights because of the Laker game, a cash raffle and big birthday parties. So it's a lot scrambling, running, and rushing.

Don't get me wrong, it's pretty fun. Joking with customers, laughing at my mistakes, (Who dropped that burger?!?!) that's good comedy.

But for the last eight years, I've sat at my desk and written all day long. That's been my job. And before that, I sat at a desk in an office and wrote. And before that, I worked at a newspaper and wrote in that office. And before that, I freelanced and wrote all day at home.

I haven't worked on my feet, running around, since I shampooed heads in a busy hair salon in the summers between college. Five hairdressers, one shampoo girl. Lotsa time on my feet.

So how do you work? On your feet? At a desk? Running around? And how do you like it?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. I like mixing it up, because I'm betting your feet are sore! The cool thing about stand-up jobs, though, is that even though they're physically draining, they leave room for creativity to flourish. Like when you get home, you'll still have enough mental energy to write. The whole time I worked in publishing (sitting on my butt, I might add), I never got any story work of my own accomplished. Everyone else's words seemed to crowd out my own.

  2. I write at my couch. Then run around with the kids, doing chores. Before that I taught grade school, so I was on my feet most of the day.
I would be a terrible waitress! Clumsy and forgetful!

  3. I stood on my feet for 20 years in the flower shop. Loved the work but the legs did ache! Intersting job because it was physically demanding and mentally demanding as well with every day being different. People skills were very neccessary as in waitressing. I always admired those people that could juggle dishes, orders and people all with a smile :)

  4. I remember those days at the Pub... it's fun but exhausting. Have fun with it!!

In theory my job should be mostly sitting but I find myself running back and forth between my desk and the engineeringing department and the production department and the shipping department...

  5. I've had sit down jobs (office work, graphic designer...), run-around jobs (floral designer, mom) and combinations of both, and to me the enjoyment depends on the stress level and the people I'm with. If I'm with creative people who don't freak out about everything, I'm happy.

  6. I had been working in the field of water treatment, before becoming a Stay at Home Mom. I was working in the field of water treatment, before becoming a Stay at Home Mom. My work was basically a mixture of taking water samples in certain areas and writing related reports on the desk. I have also been a freelance translator from home. Now I spent most of the time running here and there with a motorbike (thank goodness for that) to escort my children's activity and get the household done. I also walk with my feet on my favorite activity to take photographs. I love it! Have a wonderful weekend :)

  7. I homeschool my kids, so I'm up & down at the table throughout the day. And whenever I'm downstairs, there's a good chance I need something upstairs, or vice versa. Most of my other jobs I've had required being on my feet all the time. That's hard to do.
