Question of the Day #133

I'm not one of those people who goes nuts over St. Patrick's Day. In fact, I usually don't celebrate it at all, in fear of giant crowds and saucy people. But yesterday, after hearing that all my friends were going to our favorite pub, I decided to check it out.

And I'm glad I did. My friend Jimmy played an acoustic U2 tribute. I walked in to "A Sort of Homecoming" and reminded myself to dig out those old CDs. Then an Irish band played traditional Irish music, complete with strings. People danced in crazy hats, green sparkles and lots of shamrocks.

I really enjoyed the celebratory feel to it all.

Did you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? If so, how?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Not really, but we did have corned beef and cabbage for dinner! The acoustic U2 sounds fun!

  2. My friends have a St. Patty's celebration each year. We don't drink so instead we fill ourselves with Apple Beer, Root Beer, lots of green colored apple cider, and green crusted pizzas. Each person must choose a name tag with a very Irish name for either the Fitzpatricks or the O'Reilly family. The night is sort of like an acting class where the families poke fun of each other and bad mouth each other to their heart's content. Most of the guys even dress up in authentic Irish clothing. Complete with the hats! And this year the turn out of people was so many that they introduced a new family. The Murpheys! They came in with style shooting everyone with their cap guns. The families then go head to head in games like Croquet, Bocce, log tossing (yes real logs), drinking games, boxing (yes legit boxing with gloves and everything), and plastic spoon fighting (supposed to represent a dagger fight but the guys go shirtless and attack each other. The first one to break their plastic spoon wins. It's a hilarious game. LOVE watching it I just wish there were girls who would go against me). After all the festivities most everyone left and a small group of us sat down to watch The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

It may sound childish, and it is, but I think I'd rather watch a bunch of guys box/spoon fight/bad mouth each other with Irish accents than get drunk off my ass and not remember what I did the night before.

I hope you had fun though. St. Patricks day can be a fun holiday if you find people who you love to be with to celebrate it with!

  3. I don't usually celebrate St. Patrick's Day either but the BF is a big fan. So we headed to a pub (neither English or Irish as those pubs had been busy since 11AM!!) and had some green beer and good eats.

  4. I've never been big on St. Patrick's day either - never even had a green beer! I might have colored the milk green at some point for the kids, but that's about it.

  5. Being from Savannah GA (we have the second largest parade/celebration in the US!) I truly celebrate St. Patrick's Day every year albeit, not in the same manner as when I was younger and did the full pub crawl!

Glad you've discovered another holiday worth celebrating, however that may be.

  6. I mostly ignored the kids and did homework. O's school did this whole big thing leading up to St. Patrick's day and they even built leprechaun traps. She was so excited about it that when she came home she wrote a letter to "Lucky" asking if he had super powers. She left a gold (pennies) trail from the letter to a blue peep for him. After she went to bed Lucky ate the peep (I threw it away and left behind some smudges) gathered up the pennies and answered her note. After Lucky left I went back to my homework.

  7. Hey Sudabaki, you are not the only Mom who had a leprechaun in her house last night. Slovang Sherrie did too! Check this out:

  8. I usually don't do much on St. Patrick's either but I do remember as a very young child that this was a really big thing in NYC, painting the green lines down fifth ave was always BIG news!
Last night we were invited to a friends house and had a great time! Corned beef and cabbage is really good. Does anyone know that tomorrow is St Joseph's day, big Italian saint!
Where's the orange lines down fifth ave???
    hmmm!

  9. I walked down Main Street in Santa Monica and was so thankful that I wasn't in a bar!! I'm Irish on the inside, and that's what counts! =)

  10. I actually never heard and read about St. Patrick's day before. It just recently occurred to me here on the Web. So, no I don't celebrate. But, I participated in a meme with a related theme to it :).

  11. Did I celebrate St. Patrick's Day? It's only the greatest day of the year!!!! I begin the celebration March 1st, where my students begin to learn all about St. Patrick, Ireland, and leprechauns and I begin to wear green every day. And living in Newport, RI, we have one of the best parades where the celebration starts at sunrise and lasts until the wee hours. On the actual holiday, my class dresses in all green and they love being tormented by a mischievous leprechaun named Seamus, who tips their desks over, steals their chairs, and sprinkles gold dust all over the classroom. It's my favorite day! (and I always take the 18th off!)

  12. Eh, I didn't wear any green because when my house flooded I didn't think to grab anything green when I packed up to come to my parents for three days. So... St. Patty's day was boring and nothing happened. Sad, huh? At least I put my daughter in green! Lady Glamis
