Here we are, on the cusp of not only a new year, but a new decade. That makes me think of decades past, firmly defined, like the 60s' "Make Love Not War," the 70s' Discomania, 80's big hair and 90's grunge.
And I wonder what the first decade of the 21st century will be remembered for. The housing crisis? The United States' first black president? Granting then revoking same sex marriage rights in California? The MySpace, Facebook, Twitter explosion? War, war and more war?

Two words: Reality Television.
ReplyDeleteAll those other things were too far in the back end of the decade. Reality TV came out strong in the beginning and never really let up.
Either that or the constant state of paranoia the government instilled in us all post-9/11.
I gotta go with the online social networking, which is changing more than individual lives. It's altering publishing, politics, news. I think that will have a long impact. Although when I look at your other decades, they are defined by pop culture, so perhaps reality TV hits that spot.

Totally agree with both reality TV and social networking. But what about Fashion? I'm thinking skinny jeans, and Ugg boots. Oh man, what about those horrible Crocs?!

ReplyDeleteI think the economy. Cutting jobs, lack of hope. Pleaces like metro Detroit have a 30% unemployment rate...It hurts everyone. From the dot.bomb of 2001 to today....
ReplyDeleteMySpace was a huge part of this decade but whether or not it's known as the "Twitter/Facebook" decade will depend on whether or not the two sites burn out in the next decade. I'd say it'll best be known for political things...9/11, the war, the crash of the economy...
