Question of the Day #890

It’s like this
I wake again at 4:00 AM
The hour you described as when the world is most quiet
I think about opening the window
Letting the waves rock me back to sleep
But instead I cuddle under blankets
And talk to God
I give thanks for all the things I prayed for
That finally came
Work
A solid foothold
Confidence’s return
I don’t panic about tomorrow
My to do list
What could happen
What might not happen
I’ll face those things one step at a time
A new talent I’m developing
Paciencia
en la vida
I remind myself
As I feel sleep creeping in
It’s only right to remain peaceful
When the world is
Most quiet

What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night?
xoxo

  1. Pop a melatonin, then resolve to get some work done while I'm awake. But that project gets totally derailed by following a Facebook thread.

Then, it's time to get ready for work...

  2. Beautiful poem. Thankfully I'm a pretty good sleeper, so usually I just fall back to sleep. Unless I'm worried or upset about something and then I try focussing on my breath, relaxing from head to toe, etc. But sometimes nothing works.

I like your idea of just talking to God. Peaceful.

  3. Usually I just lay there and go back to sleep if I can. But when it's really bad, I get up and write. This was beautiful!

  4. Most of the time I can roll over and go back to sleep, but on those occasions when sleep doesn't come easy I meditate slowly one-word-at-a-time on the Lord's Prayer. I don't think I've ever gotten to the end.

  5. If I start thinking, I can't fall back to sleep. And so I chant the Heart Sutra:
Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha.

  6. Diet calculations. If I eat this many calories, I'll lose this much weight, but then the calorie-burn formula will change, so I recalculate to figure out...zzzzzzzzz.

  7. I've recently been dealing with bouts of insomnia, and have learned to get up and read. You're right though, the middle of the night is wonderfully peaceful. :)

  8. I can usually function as needed in the middle of the night without really waking up. I've been doing it for years. My wife tells of middle-of-night tech calls I used to get from work--sounded totally awake, solved problem, back snoring in 2 seconds, no recall of what I said or what was wrong (til I read the log book at work the following day). More importantly, great poem!!!

  9. Great poem! I often get up and read for a little while. Sometimes I hop on Twitter just to feel like I'm not alone.

  10. Obsess and pray. Sometimes I'll go sleep on the couch. What a poem!

  11. Great poem!

I usually just roll over and go back to sleep. I have a habit of staying in one position too long, so when I wake up I'm all stiff or numb. I used to get up a lot, but fortunately I've stopped having to do that. I'd eat and that's a BAD habit.
