Question of the Day #906

When I first lived in LA, with all the girls at Mansfield, we loved to sing. We dreamed of starting an all girl band, but none of played an instrument. So I decided to rent a piano and learn how to play it.

The thing is, I'm not that coordinated. So a friend taught me how to play chords. Enough so I could accompany us while we harmonized.

But I never really learned to play.

In fact, a couple years ago, one night when LDZ and I found ourselves at a party house in the LBC, I sat down at the baby grand and couldn't remember a thing. Not even a chorus. And when my fingers hit the keys, I wasn't even sure if I was playing real chords.

If you could suddenly acquire a great artistic ability, what would you choose?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Oh this is hard! I used to play the guitar, but was not all that accomplished and I can sing. I draw a little...make things.

I suppose if I could write like a favorite author and not have to go through the agony of revision that might be one thing I'd choose. Another might be singing like Ella Fitzgerald. (By "like" I mean to have the talent, the gift, not to sound like her or write like say...John Steinbeck.)

  2. Either play a stringed instrument or sing. I cannot do either.

  3. Make that SHOULD not do either.

  4. While I don't have a musical bone in my body, I've always thought I would love to sing or play piano. However, if it was GREAT artistic ability, it would be as a fine artist, preferrably a painter.

  5. Oh, piano. I took lessons for years at the end of high school and college, but I never quite got the hang of it. Lessons are great, of course, but there is an intrinsic talent to that instrument that is hard to replicate.

  6. Piano has been on my list. And hand drumming. And I wish I could spontaneously find my voice in writing. Instead I hear it takes about 20 years (or 10,000 hours) to become an overnight success.
