Question of the Day #454

Last night I had horrible nightmares. When I got up to go to the bathroom at 12:30, I'd already been stung by a zillion bees. By 4:00 AM, while vacationing, I'd been peeped at, stalked and attacked. And at 6:20 AM, someone was in the bedroom - I swear I heard footsteps - and I woke doing that trying to scream and move but you can't because you're dreaming thing.

In the past, I've had nightmares when I'm really stressed. But right now, I'm not particularly stressed. (Knock on wood.) In fact, I see no reason whatsoever for crazy nightmares. (That full moon is gone, right?)

Do you experience nightmares? How often? What kind? What do you do to shake off the awful feeling in the morning?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Sometimes, but more often it's wacko dreams, like I had last night (e.g., I wake up to the phone ringing but I'm in my teenage room, in the house I grew up in. On the phone, it's the agent who requested my ms at the conference. While I'm trying to talk, my sister--and my kids, who've never even been inside that house--are making too much racket for me to hear him, since it sounds like he's calling me from a cell phone connection. I go down the hall to complain to my mom, and some random black guy rolls out of her bed, mumbling, Oh, crap! and starts to put his police uniform back on. My mom first tries to deny her lover's presence, then admits that he pulled her over, thinking she was his daughter since they have the exact same color Prius, then one thing led to another). But to answer your question, I just kind of shake my head and move on with my day.

  2. Amateur dream crit here: Each of those dreams feels like attack. You might ask yourself if anywhere in your life something feels under attack. Sometimes the brain is sneaky that way. Or it could be dinner. ;)
I haven't had any nightmares lately, but, yes, I've had my share. One of my favorites, though, I turned on its head. I was being chased down dark alleys by a monsterous being. It went on and on and I couldn't get away. But when I went to scream (like you describe), I turned the scream into song. Of all things, an aria. Yes, I woke up with opera in my head. Bizarre but beautiful.

  3. I've been having crazy nightmares this week too, always stress related. Right now it's because I'm hoping a new job is going to work out. But I've been having weird dreams like losing my camera, getting ripped off on vacation, the ever popular drownign dream, etc... stinks.

  4. Thankfully I do not have nightmares often, but when I do it is either about a tornado or about a loved one dying. I wake up so incredibly tense!

  5. I don't have nightmares often, but when I do it's usually about trying to get away from a murderer. Or I have dreams where I get really upset and start crying and I feel the intense emotion in my body.

I also have a recurring dream where my retainer is in my mouth and it doesn't fit right, so I'm trying to get it out. The feeling in my mouth is very distinct. I might be grinding my teeth or something when I dream that.

The best dreams are when I'm laughing and I wake up laughing. Kinda creepy if you're the bed partner, but fun if you're the dreamer!

  6. I get all sorts of crazy dreams. I really wish I knew how to shake them off. Sometimes that pit in your stomach takes a long time to go away.

I wish I flew more in dreams. I think I've only done it once. Also, I'm not sure if I dream in color. I can never figure it out the next morning.

  7. I have nightmares all the time. I hate them, it takes me about half the day to shake that awful feeling. I have the kind of nightmares where you wake up screaming or hysterically crying and it takes a few moments to decifer whether it was a dream or not.

  8. I have them a lot too. Most often they're about bears and I'm scrambling as I try to shut a door or window, which of course, is ALWAYS broken. We have bears where we live and they've come up on the deck, so I'm sure my mind is trying to tell me something.

  9. I get nightmares when I get too hot. I get anxiety dreams fairly regularly. But what I get a lot more of are full color off the wall dreams that spark an idea for a book.

    Not complaining.
