Question of the Day #195

Greg C's answer to yesterday's question made me think of a family sailing trip we took years ago in the Virgin Islands. As we sailed, two humpback whales popped up out of the water and then kept in time with us, jumping out, arching over the waves and splashing back in, over and over. It was an amazing sight.

What amazing moments of nature have you witnessed?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. It was a dark and stormy ni... No, no wrong begining :)
But it was late at night and foggy! W and I saw 3 bull moose at the top of the gap. They were magnificent. We never had that priviledge again.

  2. On one of our three cross-country road trips, Mike and I witnessed something that we often refer to. I believe we were driving through Wyoming when we noticed two animals walking along a creek bed.

This normally isn't anything too special because when driving from one end of the country to the other, you'll see plenty of farm animals roaming around.

But this was different. It was a huge cow and a little dog strolling alongside one another. They were best friends (or so we like to say they were) and it was so sweet.

Now we refer to them simply as "The Cow and the Dog."

I was driving across the country and when I was in Montanna I saw the sky get very dark far away. All of a sudden i saw massive bolts of lightning flashing from the sky to the ground. I pulled over to the side of the road and watched for about 30 minutes. It was wild. I was fortunate enough to capture some of it with my camera. It made some great prints.

  5. We watched a mama grizzly and her 2 cubs take down an elk in Yellowstone. We also watched 2 cranes fight a young bull elk, who was getting too close to their chick. The poor chick was just scrambling around between the others while they battled it out. I've seen baby bison get up and walk just moments after being born. I guess I could go on and on -- going to National Parks is kind of my thing though. Great question, Suzanne! :)

  6. When I was in 5th grade, I saw a baby black bear on the trail to Vernal Falls in Yosemite. The bear was mega-cute, still all light brown and fluffy, probably sort of a teenage cub. Anyway, he was just hanging out off to the side of the trail, standing there. Some lady got really freaked so she screamed, threw her sack lunch at him, and ran away back down the hill. The bear bent over, picked up the lunch sack, reached in, and took out one of those tiny cans of Tree Top apple juice. He must have had one before, because he immediately cupped his paws around the can's lid, then poked into the drinking hole with his claws. When he had his claws from both paws securely in, he pried the top of the can in half and then brought it to his mouth to chug the juice. True story. And it wasn't a guy in a bear suit--those claws were too strong.

  8. When we were in Boston this past winter we went to the aquarium. On the way out we saw what I later learned was a peregrine falcon about to eat a pigeon. The falcon had the pigeon's head pinned to the ground. They were in the middle of the walk path and we didn't want to pass them for fear that the falcon would think we were trying to steal his food. After a moment the falcon clutched it's dinner and flew away. My six year old said "oh good, now we can walk this way."

  9. There are a lot of deer where I live now and it's not unusual to look out my kitchen window and see a family of 4 in my front yard or several babies running through the back yard & into the woods behind my house. The other day I counted 12 in the field next to my house!

  10. First off, thanks for the mention. I have seen some amazing sights in my life. I once had a redtail hawk swoop down and grab a snake right beside me.

Here are two other memories from my Sub days though.

I had the job of checking a tow behind cable to see why it had broken. Near the end was a shark tooth that had to be 6" long embeded in the cable. No more deep ocean swimming for me.

On my last voyage on the submarine, I went topside while we were coming into port. From a distance I saw a pod of dolphins racing toward the submarine. They quickly positioned themselves at the front of the sub and rode the bow wake for several miles. I felt they were wishing me luck in the future.

  11. Of the many I've seen, one stands out the most. I was about 13 years old, waiting on the school bus to pick me up when a doe and her fawn came out of the nearby trees and we just stood and looked at each other. I prayed that the bus wouldn't come and scare her away, but of course it did, but not until we had shared a few minutes that I'll never forget.
