During a breakout session at the SCBWI conference, as a characterization exercise, Carolyn Mackler asked us to imagine what our main character hides in their underwear drawer.
Tally hides vodka, Jane hides condoms and Savanna hides a picture of her abusive ex.
When I was sixteen, I hid cigarettes in my underwear drawer. What did you hide in your yours?

Nothing. I never felt a need to hide anything. Besides, my mom regularly snooped through my things...so anything I hid would have been found -- this also explains why I never kept a diary.
ReplyDeleteI'd never hide anything in my underwear drawer - my husband does most of the laundry. But I do hide my journal under the mattress :-)
ReplyDeleteSame - cigarettes. Today I hide nothing and it's quite liberating.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember what I hid when I was a kid. Probably cigarettes and the occasional bottle of horrible alcohol like Peach Schnapps.
ReplyDeleteToday I hide gift receipts. Not sure why.
At 16? Hmmm. Probably an issue of Playboy.
ReplyDeleteI didn't hide anything. I seriously was a good girl!
ReplyDeleteBut now I hide my children's lost teeth (in a baggie) in my underwear drawer. I don't know what to do with them because I feel bad throwing them out, but the kids can't know I have them!!
Nothin'. Didn't have anything to hide. Didn't have anything at all. Oh well, different times for different folks :)
ReplyDeleteNothing. But I did have to hide my Halloween candy when I was younger or else my brother and sister would snork it all down.
ReplyDeleteI like that exercise though and am going to use it for my WIP characters. Thanks!
