Question of the Day #574

The Critique Group verdict is in:

My pacing is off. My timing is off. And (surprisingly) my main character isn't quite slutty enough.

But my voice and dialogue are fabulous and over all, the manuscript sucks the reader in.

Voice, dialogue and sucking readers in are my strong points. I don't ever worry about that stuff. It's the mechanics that always trip me up.

What are your "given" strong points? (And we're not just talking writing here.)

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Place and setting and I think I do a pretty good job with dialogue.

  2. YAY! Those are encouraging comments. Awesome.
I'm stciking to writing on this one... pacing, characterization and action sequences are my strengths. Dialogue is a WIP and plotting needs some serious help. I'm definitely a pantser.

  3. Slut that girl up, Suzanne! :) Your critique group sounds supportive and honest. We need to hear what works and what doesn't.
I've always been told that I'm naturally good with children, which why I was drawn to being a teacher, mom and children's writer I guess!

  4. Compassion and caring...I have learned through the years.

  5. When it comes to writing, I've always been strong with planning out the details of my story before I actually write. Getting it onto the paper, describing my ideas in the way that I want is another story though.

  6. Sounds like you have a great group, Suzanne. I really don't know about me. Your questions have been hard lately. LOL! Maybe it's determination. If I really set my mind on something, I can do it if I want it bad enough.

  7. Not slutty enough? I can't wait to read your novel. :)

My strengths are probably my ability to plan, especially when it comes to mu writing. I'm not too much of a spur of the moment kinda girl.

  8. I've heard it said that the one thing you can't teach a writer is voice. You've either got it or don't. So if your crit partners give you props for that, you've got it made. Pacing you can fix. And I'm suuuurrre you can tart that girl up.
I have no idea what my strong points are. I guess I should poke around and figure it out.

  9. I agree with Rena - tough question! Maybe I'm having a little trouble locating my strong points lately...I'm pretty resourceful though.

  10. I'm clueless... I haven't really thought about it.
Good question, you give me something to ponder about.

  11. my strong points are description, characterization, and plot. Slow points are sometimes pacing, and difficulty with whose speaking from time to time.
