Question of the Day #175

I'm daydreaming about a vacation. I haven't traveled alot. Sure, I've been all over the U.S., but not outside much, so I don't have a huge travelog to choose from when deciding the best of the best.

But years ago, when I found myself in a low spot, I rented a house on cliff overlooking the ocean in a small central coast beach town where there was absolutely nothing to do. I spent a week there, by myself, and worked on my manuscript, took long walks on the beach, watched amazing sunsets, cooked great meals and took care of myself.

That was probably the best vacation I ever took. What was your best vacation?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. Our 10th wedding anniversary trip to the UK and Normandy! It was an agressive schedule but I'm glad we did it that way.

We flew in to Scotland, drove our way north and then south, and into Wales, then to the southern part of England. We took an overnight ferry to Normandy, and did toured the d-day beaches. From there we took the chunnel back to England.

We had a great time -- some very special moments of discovery and awe. To this day it still makes me smile to think of our time there.

  2. It's a toss-up between a week my husband and I spent in Corfu, Greece and a trip we took to Paris when our kids were little.
And it's been way too long since we've had a real vacation - maybe eight years. Sigh.

  3. I'm thankful I've had some pretty great vacations. When I was a teen, my best friends' parents rented a sailboat and crew and took four of us all over the Caribbean. That was pretty amazing (plus they let us drink beer :).
An Alaskan cruise with my hubby and inlaws was pretty cool and beautiful. When I was pregnant with my third child, we went to Atlantis in the Bahamas. It was so restful and pretty. The kids loved the pool, lagoon and huge aquariums.
I also enjoy the laid back family vacations to Wisconsin!
    I can't pick just one!

  4. I don't know that I could single out just one, but all the great trips that my family took when my sister and I were kids - and even as adults! We did all kinds of things from driving around New England in a motorhome to renting a house on Martha's Vineyard to cruises in the Caribbean. I always loved it as a kid, but I appreciate all those great family memories even more as I get older. We just took a mini-vacation in Scottsdale, and there's just something about all of us being together that makes the activity/trip extra-special.

  5. For my 30th birthday, I went to London, various cities of Croatia, Budapest. It was amazing. A bit of everything - sun tanning, beach hopping, hiking, museums, eating, drinking, soaking in the thermal baths.

  6. I've had a lot of great vacations, but one of my favorites was the trip my husband and I took to Kauai, while I was pregnant with our first child. Just thinking about those daily breakfast buffets is making me hungry for lunch!

  7. I've traveled a good bit and loved many of the places I've visited (some for multiple times). But my favorite vacation was to Bald Head Island (off the coast of NC) where I stayed at a huge beach house by myself for a week.
I needed the time alone and it was simply wonderful, at the end of the season so to speak, so very few people around. Lots of dolphins, sea turtles, etc. however, and a wee ghost that visited only on a side porch!

  8. Take me with you, Suzanne! I need a vacation, too. Any vacation with beautiful scenery, great food and relaxing activities is a hit for me. Have a great day :)

  10. When I think back all of my vacations seem to have periods of stress. Of course, all of my vacations were with my kids so it does make sense. My husband and I got away recently for just a few days and went to Las Vegas. We had a great time walking around, gambling a little, eating well, and seeing the shows.

  11. This doesn't exactly count as a vacation, but I got to tour the gemstone mines in Brazil and it was an amazing trip. It changed the way I look at the world, and as a result many of my stories are now set in Brazil.

  12. I've had so many great vacations! My first trip to Hawaii was magical. I won the trip from singing in a karaoke contest. My husband and I just sat on the beach the night we arrived and stared out at the ocean. It was amazing to be there, to have won the opportunity to be there. He sold his motorcycle the next summer so we could go to Maui. That too was a fabulous trip.

  13. I love your vacation--sounds absolutely perfect. I have two favorite vacations--one was Disney for my 30th birthday, the other was when my husband and I went to Ireland.

  14. I've been really fortunate to have had many wonderful vacations from a spontaneous week-long drive from Los Angeles to Vancouver to another spontaneous trip to Maui. Two very special vacations however, top my list... for my 30th birthday, my love whisked me away to Ensenada, Mexico for a long weekend. We had no plans. We just drove to Mexico and stopped there. It was fabulous! The next was when my entire family (all 5 siblings and their kids and their kids' kids - there were about 30 if us total) spent a week in Orlando celebrating my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. It was wonderful to all be in the same place!

  15. Oh my goodness. I couldn't possibly pick one, or even two or three, as the best(s)! So many wonderful, wonderful holidays to choose from. Three I've blogged about recently were to Bhutan, Giverny (France) and Istanbul. Those were certainly AMONG the best. Check them out on Wandering Pam: http://wanderingpam.blogspot.com

  16. Too many vacations I had have and hard to pick which one. The best perhaps is staying home sometimes doing nothing when all is quiet and still.

  18. When I went to Europe for 3 weeks. But that was 13 years ago... Ah, if I could only do it again!

  19. The honours would have to be shared by two vacations.

The 2005 hiking trip to Injasuthi (place of the well-fed dog) in the majestic Drakensberg mountains. The silence and the peace was transcendental.

And our recent European adventure through Switzerland and Croatia, which I'm currently blogging about.

  21. For the overall - I enjoyed every aspect of it - I have to say the week in Victoria, BC, Canada with my wife-to-be. I've had other vacations that had cool highlights, like a tour of a private zoo in Tijuana where I carried a 3 day old tiger cub to the dalmation that was the wet nurse; getting to pet a penguin, a penguin baby, a rhino and a killer whale in San Diego.

  22. Our best vacation had the potential of being our worst. We went on vacation with another couple and they turned out to be unrefined when out in public. The first night we showed up for dinner in dressy clothes and they each wore t-shirts that said "I'm with stupid" and they had an arrow pointing to the other one. So we parted ways and the vacation improved.

We were in the Dominican Republic and we went golfing, swimming, shoping and horseback riding. While horseback riding in the mountains, we stopped at a small stream and were offered the opportunity to take a swim. There were only 4 Americans on the ride and the rest of the people were from Holland. Well the only ones that went for a swim were the leader (a girl from Texas), one of the hands and my wife and I. I hadn't planned on swimming so I didn't have on a bathing suit so I went in in my underware. Talk about being uninhibited in those days. And they weren't baggies either LOL. I also had a nice body back then and got a lot of long looks. :). Fun fun fun.

  23. I'd love to say my honeymoon in Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, etc... it was spectacular and lots of scuba. But my all time favorite would be a 3 week trip to the Tetons, Jackson Hole, and Yellowstone Nat'l Park - we hiked every single day and white water rafted and came face to face with tons of animals and saw geysers just the 2 of us... WAY cool!
