Question of the day #377

Yesterday, I went to the supermarket to stock up on chicken because they were having a sale. Fifty percent off Foster Farms chicken. Now I'd love to be eating organic, but right now, that's just not possible, so Foster Farms is as low hormone, antibiotic-less chicken as I'm going to get.

So, I was all psyched and bought a small ton of bone in, skin on chicken breasts. When I got home, I popped them into separate food saver bags and began to vacuum seal them.

It sucked the air out, but then it's supposed to heat the plastic to make a seal. And it didn't. I was so bummed. My food saver is my all time favorite kitchen gadget. It makes it possible to buy a zillion chicken breasts on sale, seal 'em up and freeze them for a hungry day.

And it's dead.

So I'm mourning my food saver today, planning how I'm going to eat six chicken breasts in the next 72 hours and wondering, what kitchen gadget can you not do without?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. You can still freeze them without the gadget. I know I do.

Over the winter, I love my little George Foreman grill.

  2. While your food saver vacuumer gets fixed/replaced (yay Christmas!), why don't you just put the chicken in regular Ziploc bags? That's what I do - break them into 2 breasts per bag which is perfect for dinner for two. I got the Ziploc bags at Costco in bulk no joke in 2002.

But back to question at hand. I could never live without tongs and my awesome knives. I have a million pairs of tongs; use them for everything!

  3. I have one amazing knife I could not do without. Oh, but what about my coffee maker? Is that a gadget? If so, then that would be my fav! I'd die without my morning caffeine fix.

I recently bought the Ziploc Freezer Vacuum. Not as good as your sealer but it'll work (and it's cheap).

  4. We have one of those Magic Bullets that they sell on t.v. That thing is awesome for whipping up the morning smoothie. It's also good for pestos, salsa, etc. I really like it, and use it almost every day.

  5. Wow! We all have our gadgets. How interesting. Well, I just found my most favorite!!!! I can make hearty wonderful soups quickly with my hand held blender! I previously had to transfer everything from the pot into the blender then back in the pot!!! And a very little at a time. Now it is all done in the pot. I am so happy :)

  9. I'm with LD - my coffee maker is always there for me when I need him. I loved my Foreman too but used it so much that I had to get rid of it when the non-stick coating started to scratch. I'm hoping Santa will bring me another one this year.

  11. Uh, yeah, just wrap them snugly in foil.

  12. I have a baby food processor that I use to chop everything from onions to ham. I only tried to use it to make baby food once and the baby wouldn't eat it.

  13. I really enjoy backwoods camping, where you haul everything you need to survive on your back. I've learned the only thing I can't live without, is a good sharp knife. Everything else, there are work-arounds.

Although I admit, I am very passionate about this amazing corkscrew that my friend gave me. I can open a bottle of wine in 5 seconds (or less). :)
