Question of the Day #371

When I was a kid, my mom used to take make our favorite meals on our birthdays. My brother always asked for Shrimp Scampi. In fact, he still begs her for it when we go to Vermont every Christmas.

I always requested beef stroganoff. Now, at the time, my mom worked 60 hour weeks and was yet to become the gourmet chef she is now due to retirement and lots of blizzards that keep her stuck inside (the kitchen). So that beef stroganoff was made with ground chuck and cream of mushroom soup and whole bunch of other canned, unhealthy ingredients. I'm not sure if I'd love it or hate if I were to try it now, but I can tell you, processed and disgusto as it was, I loved it then.

What was your favorite meal as a kid?

xoxo,
Suzanne

  1. I always loved walking in the door from school, and smelling potato pancakes being made. (my tummy just growled thinking about it)

A close second was Sloppy Joes. I could out eat my entire family in about 10 minutes flat.

  3. I love my mom's cooking. As a child she made Tuna 'n Noodles, which was a classic. Totally not appealing to me now apart from the nostalgia factor. She also made Weiners & Saurkraut and some damn tasty meatloaf!

  4. I can't believe you are talking about this today. Monday I made dinner for the senior residence here in town. I had made them Granny's Kick Ass Stew!!! They loved it, but the topic of conversation with my table of lovely "seasoned" women was just yours today!!
And I told them of my kids' favorites. What a coinkidink :) These gals all did the same thing with their children and they have decades over me!!! Must be a Mom thing.

  7. Bacon, eggs & toast, the breakfast my Dad made on Sundays. After church he'd plug in the big electric griddle and start frying bacon & eggs. It's nothing fancy but it was always a meal we enjoyed as a family - very relaxed and never rushed like dinner sometimes was. To this day, any time we're all together, Dad's still in charge of breakfast. :)

  8. Creamed mushrooms on toast! That's what I'd ask for as a favor. This summer my daughter made it more me, also by request. She got the recipe from Epicurious.com, (creamed mushrooms and ham) and it was super delicious!
