Question of the Day #1,249

My friend, C, posted a great question on Facebook this morning. She wrote that when we were kids, we used to call friends' parents Mr. or Mrs. __________, and now kids call adults by their first names. She asked when this transition took place.

That's a great question. Beyond that, I'm wondering, what other differences do you notice about the way we grew up and the way kids grow up today?

  1. When my kids were growing up, I was called Mommy C by their friends. Loved that!!
I think there is more scheduling in children's lives now. They have no time to dream or veg or think on their own. They are plugged into so many gadgets that are distractions from real growing up time.
Electronics of course is playing an incredible role in their short lives. Will be interesting to see how that plays out. Hope I'm here to see :)

  2. The way kids just go up to grown ups and TALK TO THEM. When I was a kid, I waited for the grown ups to make eye contact with me before speaking...they're SO bold.

  3. Kids can't just go off any play in the neighbourhood anymore.
Kids today have "lockdown" drills at school.
They've been exposed to technology at a very early age and are therefore tech savvy.
I see a lot of parents put pressure on kids today to overachieve at everything they do.

  5. Not only did we not call adults by their first names, we called adult cousins by aunt or uncle even when they weren't. So we all grew up thinking we had a slew of aunts and uncles when in fact we only had one. The transistion happened, because we allowed it to happen. And now there isn't one trophy for one little league team. Everyone gets a trophy. Everyone is a winner. Until they realize they aren't.

  6. Kids in my day learned how to spell and write properly. With texting, that seems to be a thing of the past.

  7. I'm not sure. It depends when you finally start getting treated as an adult.
I had a secretary in high school, who works with my mom now, and we still keep in contact. I ended up doing a report about her in my first year of college. Then I did a placement with her during the last year of college. I still call her Ms. [her last name]. Whenever I visit my parents, I stop by to see her, just catch up, but I just can't seem to call her by her first name! lol
