So, as I'm adjusting to my new home, I'm especially aware of what I hear and don't hear. I don't hear the freeway anymore. Yay! I don't hear howling dogs at odd hours of the night. And I don't hear the lone barker.
I do hear kids playing. And I hear a woman who laughs a crazy cackly, on the edge of nutty laugh. I've decided to name her The Cackler.
But I'll take the sounds of happy people over freeway and howlers anyday.
What sounds do you hear where you live?
xoxo,
Suzanne
Today all I've been hearing for over five hours is the sound of one of those HUGE air compressors working like crazy to keep a bouncy house inflated at the kids' carnival party at the church right BEHIND MY HOUSE! If this thing doesn't end by 6:00 I'm heading over there with a big knife and a grin.
ReplyDelete(Usually I hear birds and bugs and frogs in my backyard - with the a low background street noise.)
Last night the bard owls were courting each other all night long!
ReplyDeleteI like to hear the many night sounds especially the frenzied yelping of the coyotes. I wish I could see them in their frenzy (At a very safe distance :)
Right now I just hear crickets and insects, and a train whistle off in the distance. During the day I would hear an occasional dog bark and a car go by. Or kids playing.
ReplyDeleteI had made a similar move a few years ago - from the city of Hoboken with tons and tons of people and bars and restaurants, to a nice quiet suburban neighborhood. It's awesome.
It's very quiet where I live. Occaisionally I notice a passing car or a small plane fying overhead (there's a private airport about 1/4 mile away) but most of the noise comes from crickets & various other insects & random birds. My favorite noise however, is my duaghter's babble.
ReplyDeleteIf it's windy, I hear wind chimes...which I thought would be nice...but they're more annoying than anything. Hope you're enjoying your new place!
ReplyDeleteThis weekend, we went fishing before dawn. My son asked what the roar we were hearing was. It was the ocean which is about a mile away. We also heard all kinds of other noises like shrimp boats getting ready to go out and the sound of shrimp jumping in the water. It was really quiet.
ReplyDeleteSome mornings I hear the squirrels scurrying across the roof. (I hope they're just squirrels!)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you made a good move! It's pretty quiet where I live - I often notice the clocks ticking. There's a small airport nearby that I worried would bug me, but I hardly notice them anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've actually made a post about the noises around my house before. I love it!! You can always tell it's summer because you can hear engines roaring at the raceway close to our house. There's sometimes train horns that will sound off at night. Crickets are a must at night. The sound of airplanes overhead. There is always a soft hum of traffic in the background. In my backyard my father made a pond with a couple of water features so it's always nice to sit outside in the shade and listen to that calming sound. Other than kids playing at the school field behind my house there isn't much more sound by my home. My cousins visited from New York and one of them said that they loved how quiet it was. I have to agree. I love the peacefulness of the place I live!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on moving in!!
I LOVE the sounds of my neighborhood! I hear the little ones playing at the preschool behind my house, the faraway whistle of the trains heading to NYC and the church bells ringing in town.
ReplyDeleteOh, and my own adorable (but very loud) children.
I used to wake up to the sound of cans being taken out of the alleyway trash cans at 6am - now i wear ear plugs!
ReplyDeleteDepending on how the wind's blowing, we can usually hear the freeway. Also, cars driving up our street, since our bedroom's in the front of the house. Nature-wise, lots of screech owls in our neighborhood. Koi don't last long around here.
ReplyDeleteYour new sounds sound much better! Congrats on your move!
