Question of the Day #955
On a recent business trip, I spotted the latest Sarah Dessen book in an airport bookstore. I read the first half eastbound and the second half westbound.
I've read every one of her novels. Her subtle tone and well drawn characters suck me in every time.
In What Happened to Goodbye, Mclean moves from town to town with her father, creating a new identity in each spot. Drama girl in one town, sporty girl in another. But in this latest "home," she inadvertently finds herself being herself. And when another move looms, she cracks open at the possibility of tearing out the tender roots she's planted.
For me, a Dessen novel doesn't always provide the most riveting storylines or surprise endings. It provides comfort. The inner dialogue makes me feel like I'm listening to a good friend. And the subtle sense of community never fails to develop.
Good stuff.
So, now that I finished that novel, I need a new pick. Can you help me out? What are you reading this Summer?
xoxo,
Suzanne
Can't help you there because I'm reading all baby books! But if you're going down that route I highly recommend the hysterical "Go the F**k to Sleep" by Adam Mansbach.
ReplyDeleteMy fave book in the entire world that I truly believe is the secret to my "success"- 25 Ways to Win w/ People by John Maxwell. Love it.
ReplyDeleteThen I also have 2 copies of Go the Fuck Asleep as Kristen mentioned above.
I'm on the library list for Left Neglected by Lisa Genova (I'm #17) and Tina Fey's Bossypants (#66).
ReplyDeleteToday I picked up Blessings by Anna Quindlen, Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella and All Over The Map by Laura Fraser.
My library is doing an adult summer reading club. You earn play money for every book you read. Then you can use the play money to buy $1 used books. You can earn up to 8 free books! For every review you write up, you get a raffle ticket for a giant basket of tea and chocolate and other goodies.
Just finished The WEird Sisters--it was very, very good.
ReplyDeleteScott Westerfeld recently gave an awesome blurb to a friend of mine, so I picked up UGLIES at the library. Even though I'm not usually a sci-fi fan, I was like, Whoa!!! Blown away by how good it was. PRETTIES is just as fabulous, and now I'm on to SPECIALS, with EXTRAS already waiting for me.
